  1. The LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I come to you in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with you, and may also believe you forever.” Moses told the words of the people to the LORD.

  2. The LORD said to Moses, “How long will this people despise me? and how long will they not believe in me, for all the signs which I have worked among them?

  3. because all those men who have seen my glory, and my signs, which I worked in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have tempted me these ten times, and have not listened to my voice;

  4. Moses said, “Hereby you shall know that the LORD has sent me to do all these works; for they are not from my own mind.

  5. If these men die the common death of all men, or if they experience what all men experience, then the LORD hasn’t sent me.

  6. But if the LORD makes a new thing, and the ground opens its mouth, and swallows them up, with all that belong to them, and they go down alive into Sheol; then you shall understand that these men have despised the LORD.”

  7. As he made an end of speaking all these words, the ground that was under them split apart.

  8. The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, with their households, all of Korah’s men, and all their goods.

  9. So they, and all that belonged to them went down alive into Sheol. The earth closed on them, and they perished from among the assembly.

  10. All Israel that were around them fled at their cry; for they said, “Lest the earth swallow us up!”

  11. Fire came out from the LORD, and devoured the two hundred fifty men who offered the incense.

  12. The LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

  13. “Speak to the children of Israel, and take rods from them, one for each fathers’ house, of all their princes according to their fathers’ houses, twelve rods. Write each man’s name on his rod.

  14. You shall write Aaron’s name on the rod of Levi; for there shall be one rod for each head of their fathers’ houses.

  15. You shall lay them up in the Tent of Meeting before the testimony, where I meet with you.

  16. It shall happen, that the rod of the man whom I shall choose shall bud. I will make the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against you, cease from me.”

  17. Moses spoke to the children of Israel; and all their princes gave him rods, for each prince one, according to their fathers’ houses, even twelve rods. Aaron’s rod was among their rods.

  18. Moses laid up the rods before the LORD in the tent of the testimony.

  19. On the next day, Moses went into the tent of the testimony; and behold, Aaron’s rod for the house of Levi had sprouted, budded, produced blossoms, and bore ripe almonds.

  20. Moses brought out all the rods from before the LORD to all the children of Israel. They looked, and each man took his rod.

  21. The LORD said to Moses, “Put back the rod of Aaron before the testimony, to be kept for a token against the children of rebellion; that you may make an end of their murmurings against me, that they not die.”

  22. Moses did so. As the LORD commanded him, so he did.

  23. The children of Israel spoke to Moses, saying, “Behold, we perish! We are undone! We are all undone!

  24. Did a people ever hear the voice of God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as you have heard, and live?

  25. Or has God tried to go and take a nation for himself from the midst of another nation, by trials, by signs, by wonders, by war, by a mighty hand, by an outstretched arm, and by great terrors, according to all that the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?
