  1. Then came certain of the elders of Israel to me, and sat before me.

  2. the LORD’s word came to me, saying,

  3. Son of man, these men have taken their idols into their heart, and put the stumbling block of their iniquity before their face: should I be inquired of at all by them?

  4. Therefore speak to them, and tell them, Thus says the Lord GOD: Every man of the house of Israel who takes his idols into his heart, and puts the stumbling block of his iniquity before his face, and comes to the prophet; I the LORD will answer him therein according to the multitude of his idols;

  5. that I may take the house of Israel in their own heart, because they are all estranged from me through their idols.

  6. Therefore tell the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord GOD: Return, and turn yourselves from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations.

  7. For everyone of the house of Israel, or of the strangers who live in Israel, who separates himself from me, and takes his idols into his heart, and puts the stumbling block of his iniquity before his face, and comes to the prophet to inquire for himself of me; I the LORD will answer him by myself:

  8. and I will set my face against that man, and will make him an astonishment, for a sign and a proverb, and I will cut him off from the midst of my people; and you shall know that I am the LORD.

  9. If the prophet is deceived and speak a word, I, the LORD, have deceived that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand on him, and will destroy him from the midst of my people Israel.

  10. They shall bear their iniquity: the iniquity of the prophet shall be even as the iniquity of him who seeks him;

  11. that the house of Israel may go no more astray from me, neither defile themselves any more with all their transgressions; but that they may be my people, and I may be their God, says the Lord GOD.

  12. the LORD’s word came to me, saying,

  13. Son of man, when a land sins against me by committing a trespass, and I stretch out my hand on it, and break the staff of its bread, and send famine on it, and cut off from it man and animal;

  14. though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they should deliver but their own souls by their righteousness, says the Lord GOD.

  15. You have played the prostitute also with the Assyrians, because you were insatiable; yes, you have played the prostitute with them, and yet you weren’t satisfied.

  16. You have moreover multiplied your prostitution to the land of merchants, to Kasdimah; and yet you weren’t satisfied with this.

  17. How weak is your heart, says the Lord GOD, since you do all these things, the work of an impudent prostitute;

  18. or who does not do any of those things, but even has eaten on the mountains, and defiled his neighbor’s wife,

  19. has wronged the poor and needy, has taken by robbery, has not restored the pledge, and has lifted up his eyes to the idols, has committed abomination,

  20. Oholah played the prostitute when she was mine; and she doted on her lovers, on the Assyrians her neighbors,

  21. who were clothed with blue, governors and rulers, all of them desirable young men, horsemen riding on horses.

  22. She bestowed her prostitution on them, the choicest men of Assyria all of them; and on whoever she doted, with all their idols she defiled herself.

  23. He said to me, Son of man,this is the place of my throne, and the place of the soles of my feet, where I will dwell in the midst of the children of Israel forever. The house of Israel shall no more defile my holy name, neither they, nor their kings, by their prostitution, and by the dead bodies of their kings in their high places;

  24. in their setting of their threshold by my threshold, and their door post beside my door post, and there was a wall between me and them; and they have defiled my holy name by their abominations which they have committed: therefore I have consumed them in my anger.

  25. Now let them put away their prostitution, and the dead bodies of their kings, far from me; and I will dwell in their midst forever.
