  1. As for my people, their oppressors have stripped them, and women have ruled over them. O my people, they that call thee blessed, the same deceive thee, and destroy the way of thy steps.

  2. And the Lord said: Because the daughters of Sion are haughty, and have walked with stretched out necks, and wanton glances of their eyes, and made a noise as they walked with their feet and moved in a set pace:

  3. The Lord will make bald the crown of the head of the daughters of Sion, and the Lord will discover their hair.

  4. In that day the Lord will take away the ornaments of shoes, and little moons,

  5. And chains and necklaces, and bracelets, and bonnets,

  6. And bodkins, and ornaments of the legs, and tablets, and sweet balls, and earrings,

  7. And rings, and jewels hanging on the forehead,

  8. And changes of apparel, and short cloaks, and fine linen, and crisping pins,

  9. And lookingglasses, and lawns, and headbands, and fine veils.

  10. And instead of a sweet smell there shall be stench, and instead of a girdle, a cord, and instead of curled hair, baldness, and instead of a stomacher, haircloth.

  11. And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying: We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name, take away our reproach.

  12. Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign. Behold a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son and his name shall be called Emmanuel.

  13. In that day Egypt shall be like unto women, and they shall be amazed, and afraid, because of the moving of the hand of the Lord of hosts, which he shall move over it.

  14. Rise up, ye rich women, and hear my voice: ye confident daughters, give ear to my speech.

  15. For after days and a year, you that are confident shall be troubled: for the vintage is at an end, the gathering shall come no more.

  16. Be astonished, ye rich women, be troubled, ye confident ones: strip you, and be confounded, gird your loins.

  17. Can a woman forget her infant, so as not to have pity on the son of her womb? and if she should forget, yet will not I forget thee.

  18. For the Lord hath called thee as a woman forsaken and mourning in spirit, and as a wife cast off from her youth, said thy God.

  19. Will a virgin forget her ornament, or a bride her stomacher? but my people hath forgotten me days without number.

  20. I have likened the daughter of Sion to a beautiful and delicate woman.

  21. The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead the dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to offer libations to strange gods, and to provoke me to anger.

  22. Thus saith the Lord of hosts the God of Israel: Consider ye, and call for the mourning women, and let them come: and send to them that are wise women, and let them make haste:

  23. Hear therefore, ye women, the word of the Lord: and let your ears receive the word of his mouth: and teach your daughters wailing: and every one her neighbour mourning.

  24. Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, the young men and old men together: and I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them joyful after their sorrow.

  25. A sword upon their horses, and upon their chariots, and upon all the people that are in the midst of her: and they shall become as women: a sword upon her treasures, and they shall be made a spoil.
