  1. And this shall be to you an everlasting ordinance. The seventh month, the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict your souls, and shall do no work, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourneth among you.

  2. Upon this day shall be the expiation for you, and the cleansing from all your sins. You shall be cleansed before the Lord.

  3. For it is a sabbath of rest: and you shall afflict your souls by a perpetual religion.

  4. And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

  5. Upon the tenth day of this seventh month shall be the day of atonement. It shall be most solemn, and shall be called holy: and you shall await your souls on that day, and shall offer a holocaust to the Lord.

  6. You shall do no servile work in the time of this day: because it is a day of propitiation, that the Lord your God may be merciful unto you.

  7. Every soul that is not afflicted on this day, shall perish from among his people.

  8. And every soul that shall do any work, the same will I destroy from among his people.

  9. You shall do no work therefore on that day: it shall be an everlasting ordinance unto you in all your generations, and dwellings.

  10. It is a sabbath of rest, and you shall afflict your souls beginning on the ninth day of the month. From evening until evening you shall celebrate your sabbaths.

  11. And I proclaimed there a fast by the river Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before the Lord our God, and might ask of him a right way for us and for our children, and for all our substance.

  12. For I was ashamed to ask the king for aid and for horsemen, to defend us from the enemy in the way: because we had said to the king: The hand of our God is upon all them that seek him in goodness: and his power and strength, and wrath upon all them that forsake him.

  13. And we fasted, and besought our God for this: and it fell out prosperously unto us.
