Light for the Crusher and the Crushed

At first glance, Proverbs 29:13 looks like an echo of Proverbs 22:2—"The rich and poor meet together: the LORD is the maker of them all." But look closely at the Hebrew text, and the scene turns dark.

The second figure is not merely a wealthy neighbor. He is the ’îš təkākîm H8501 (tâkâk), a word appearing nowhere else in the entire Bible. It stems from a root meaning "to crush." This is the predatory usurer, the extortioner, the man who gets ahead by wringing everything out of the defenseless.

When these two meet (pāgaš H6298), it is not a casual crossing of paths. It is an unavoidable collision between a victim and his victimizer. And right at the point of impact, Solomon drops a jarring truth: "the LORD lighteneth both their eyes."

To lighten the eyes (’ôwr H215) is an idiom for granting life and consciousness Psalms 13:3. God gives the breath, the vision, and the very pulse to the impoverished man—and to the man who crushed him. The same hand that sustains the oppressed is currently powering the heart of the oppressor.

Why keep the villain alive?

Look at the surrounding verses. In Proverbs 29:12, we see top-down rot: a ruler listens to lies (šeqer H8267), turning his administration wicked (rāšā‘ H7563). In Proverbs 29:14, we see ultimate justice: a king who faithfully (’emeth H571) judges the poor will have his throne established (kûwn H3559). Verse 13 is the messy street reality sandwiched between them.

Until that righteous throne arrives, common grace holds the world together. God sustains the breath of the deceitful man not as an endorsement of his theft, but as an act of immense, patient sovereignty—giving the usurer time to repent, and giving the poor man strength to endure.

When you face someone who manipulates, exploits, or actively harms you, remember whose air they are breathing. God has not abandoned the scene; He illuminates it entirely. He fuels their next heartbeat, He watches the exchange, and His justice will not be late.
