Stop Shadowboxing and Start Running with Purpose

Have you ever had one of those days where you were busy from sunup to sundown, yet you felt like you accomplished absolutely nothing? It is exhausting to feel like you are just spinning your wheels. Paul knew that feeling, and he wanted something better for us. In 1 Corinthians 9:24, he reminds us that the Christian life isn't about just staying busy; it is about moving in a specific direction.

In I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:, Paul uses two sports metaphors to make his point. First, he talks about running. He says he doesn't run "uncertainly." That word in Greek is adelos, and it means to run without a clear goal or a visible finish line. Think about how much harder it is to run when you don't know where the race ends! Paul wants us to keep our eyes on the prize, just like he mentions in Philippians 3:14.

Then, he shifts to boxing. He says he isn't just "beateth the air." The Greek word for "beateth" is dero, which refers to striking or smiting. He is saying his spiritual life isn't just shadowboxing or swinging at nothing. He is engaging in a real fight with real purpose. When we live with intentionality, our prayers, our work, and our kindness aren't just wasted energy—they are direct hits that make a difference in God's kingdom.

Application

Today, try a "purpose check." Before you start a task or enter a conversation, ask yourself: "How can I do this with intention for God?" Instead of just going through the motions, pick one thing—like a chore, a phone call, or a meeting—and do it specifically to show the love of Christ.

Prayer

Lord, help me to stop wandering and start walking with purpose. Clear away the distractions that make me feel like I am just beating the air. I want every step I take today to lead me closer to You. Amen.
