  1. And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, land crawlers, and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so.

  2. God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that crawls upon the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

  3. And you are to bring two of every living creature into the ark—male and female—to keep them alive with you.

  4. Two of every kind of bird and animal and crawling creature will come to you to be kept alive.

  5. You are to take with you seven pairs of every kind of clean animal, a male and its mate; a pair of every kind of unclean animal, a male and its mate;

  6. and seven pairs of every kind of bird of the air, male and female, to preserve their offspring on the face of all the earth.

  7. For seven days from now I will send rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights, and I will wipe from the face of the earth every living thing I have made.”

  8. And Noah did all that the LORD had commanded him.

  9. Now Noah was 600 years old when the floodwaters came upon the earth.

  10. And Noah and his wife, with his sons and their wives, entered the ark to escape the waters of the flood.

  11. The clean and unclean animals, the birds, and everything that crawls along the ground

  12. The fear and dread of you will fall on every living creature on the earth, every bird of the air, every creature that crawls on the ground, and all the fish of the sea. They are delivered into your hand.

  13. Everything that lives and moves will be food for you; just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you all things.

  14. “Behold, I now establish My covenant with you and your descendants after you,

  15. and with every living creature that was with you—the birds, the livestock, and every beast of the earth—every living thing that came out of the ark.

  16. That very day Laban removed all the streaked or spotted male goats and every speckled or spotted female goat—every one that had any white on it—and every dark-colored lamb, and he placed them under the care of his sons.

  17. Then he put a three-day journey between himself and Jacob, while Jacob was shepherding the rest of Laban’s flocks.

  18. Jacob, however, took fresh branches of poplar, almond, and plane trees, and peeled the bark, exposing the white inner wood of the branches.

  19. Then he set the peeled branches in the watering troughs in front of the flocks coming in to drink. So when the flocks were in heat and came to drink,

  20. they mated in front of the branches. And they bore young that were streaked or speckled or spotted.

  21. Jacob set apart the young, but made the rest face the streaked dark-colored sheep in Laban’s flocks. Then he set his own stock apart and did not put them with Laban’s animals.

  22. Whenever the stronger females of the flock were in heat, Jacob would place the branches in the troughs, in full view of the animals, so that they would breed in front of the branches.

  23. But if the animals were weak, he did not set out the branches. So the weaker animals went to Laban and the stronger ones to Jacob.

  24. Thus Jacob became exceedingly prosperous. He owned large flocks, maidservants and menservants, and camels and donkeys.

  25. If he said, ‘The speckled will be your wages,’ then the whole flock bore speckled offspring. If he said, ‘The streaked will be your wages,’ then the whole flock bore streaked offspring.
