  1. Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat; and they draw near unto the gates of death.

  2. Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses.

  3. He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.

  9. They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits' end.

  10. Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.

  11. He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.

  12. Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven.

  13. My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction:

  14. For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

  15. ¶ Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

  16. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

  17. For I will not contend for ever, neither will I be always wroth: for the spirit should fail before me, and the souls which I have made.

  18. ¶ For the iniquity of his covetousness was I wroth, and smote him: I hid me, and was wroth, and he went on frowardly in the way of his heart.

  19. I have seen his ways, and will heal him: I will lead him also, and restore comforts unto him and to his mourners.

  20. ¶ I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus; Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke: turn thou me, and I shall be turned; for thou art the LORD my God.

  21. Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I smote upon my thigh: I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth.

  22. Is Ephraim my dear son? is he a pleasant child? for since I spake against him, I do earnestly remember him still: therefore my bowels are troubled for him; I will surely have mercy upon him, saith the LORD.

  23. And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:

  24. For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

  25. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?
