  1. And of all the things of which you receive tithes, offer the firstfruits to the Lord, and give them to Aaron the priest.

  2. All the things that you shall offer of the tithes, and shall separate for the gifts of the Lord, shall be the best and choicest things.

  3. And thou shalt say to them: If you offer all the goodly and the better things of the tithes, it shall be reckoned to you as if you had given the firstfruits of the barnfloor and the winepress:

  4. And you shall eat them in all your places, both you and your families: because it is your reward for the ministry, wherewith you serve in the tabernacle of the testimony.

  5. And you shall not sin in this point, by reserving the choicest and fat things to yourselves, lest you profane the oblations of the children of Israel, and die.

  6. Command the children of Israel that they give to the Levites out of their possessions,

  7. Cities to dwell in, and their suburbs round about: that they may abide in the towns, and the suburbs may be for them cattle and beasts:

  8. Which suburbs shall reach from the walls of the cities outward, a thousand paces on every side:

  9. Toward the east shall be two thousand cubits: and toward the south in like manner shall be two thousand cubits: toward the sea also, which looketh to the west, shall be the same extent: and the north side shall be bounded with the like limits. And the cities shall be in the midst, and the suburbs without.

  10. And among the cities, which you shall give to the Levites, six shall be separated for refuge to fugitives, that he who hath shed blood may flee to them: and besides these there shall be other forty-two cities,

  11. That is, in all forty-eight with their suburbs.

  12. And of these cities which shall be given out of the possessions of the children of Israel, from them that have more, more shall be taken: and from them that have less, fewer. Each shall give towns to the Levites according to the extent of their inheritance.

  13. To Levi also he said: Thy perfection, and thy doctrine be to thy holy man, whom thou hast proved in the temptation, and judged at the waters of contradiction:

  14. Who hath said to his father, and to his mother: I do not know you; and to his brethren: I know you not: and their own children they have not known. These have kept thy word, and observed thy covenant,

  15. Thy judgments, O Jacob, and thy law, O Israel: they shall put incense in thy wrath and holocaust upon thy altar.

  16. Bless, O Lord, his strength, and receive the works of his hands. Strike the backs of his enemies, and let not them that hate him rise.

  17. And he commanded them, saying: This is the thing that you must do.

  18. Let a third part of you go in on the sabbath, and keep the watch of the king's house. And let a third part be at the gate of Sur; and let a third part be at the gate behind the dwelling of the shieldbearers; and you shall keep the watch of the house of Messa.

  19. But let two parts of you all that go forth on the sabbath, keep the watch of the house of the Lord about the king.

  20. And you shall compass him round about, having weapons in your hands: and if any man shall enter the precinct of the temple, let him be slain: and you shall be with the king, coming in and going out.

  21. And the centurions did according to all things that Joiada the priest, had commanded them: and taking every one their men, that went in on the sabbath, with them that went out in the sabbath, came to Joiada, the priest.

  22. So the sons of Levi were Gerson, Caath, and Merari.

  23. And these are the names of the sons of Gerson: Lobni and Semei.

  24. The sons of Caath: Amram, and Isaar, and Hebron, and Oziel.

  25. The sons of Merari: Moholi and Musi. And these are the kindreds of Levi according to their families.
