Stepping Into Your New Identity

Have you ever felt like you were trying to live a new life with an old heart? It is like trying to run a race in boots that are two sizes too small—eventually, the old ways just do not fit where God is taking you. We often struggle because we try to change our behavior without realizing that God has already changed our identity.

In Colossians 3:10, the Bible tells us, "And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:." Paul uses a vivid word here for "put on," which is endýō. It literally means to sink into a garment. It is the beautiful idea of stepping into a fresh identity, much like you would step into a clean set of clothes. You are not just a patched-up version of your old self; you have been given a completely new nature in Christ.

This transformation is a daily process. The Greek word for "renewed" is anakainóō, which means to renovate or make new again. This renovation happens through "knowledge"—not just memorizing facts, but a deep, personal friendship with Jesus. As we spend time with Him, our minds begin to reflect His thoughts, similar to the way Romans 12:2 describes being transformed by a renewed mind. We are being restored to the original beauty God intended back in Genesis 1:27.

Application

Today, identify one 'old garment'—perhaps an old habit of worry or a harsh way of speaking—and consciously 'take it off.' Replace it by asking the Holy Spirit to help you 'put on' the peace or kindness of Christ instead. Remember, you are being renovated into His image one day at a time.

Lord, thank You for giving me a brand-new identity. Please renew my mind today and help me grow in my knowledge of You so that I can reflect Your love to everyone I meet. Amen.
