Finding Your Name in God's Eternal Family

Have you ever tried to trace your ancestry? We spend so much time figuring out where we come from, searching for a deeper sense of belonging. But what if your most important identity wasn’t found in a human family tree, but was given to you directly by the Creator?

In the middle of a powerful prayer, Paul reminds the Ephesians of a fundamental truth about our spiritual origin. In Ephesians 3:15, we read: Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,. This is a profound statement. Paul uses the Greek word for “family,” patriá, which literally means “fatherhood” or “lineage.” He is declaring that every legitimate instance of fatherhood, every family structure, in heaven or on earth, draws its essential nature and existence from the ultimate Father—God Himself.

Because God is the source of all fatherhood, He is the one who establishes our identity. The phrase “is named” comes from the Greek word onomázō, which signifies ownership and authority. When God names something, He claims it. We are not spiritual orphans; we are beloved children, adopted into a vast, eternal household. This identity is secure, not based on our performance or earthly lineage, but solely on the fact that we bear the name of the Father.

This truth provides immense comfort and a powerful call to unity. If we are all named by the same Father, we are truly one family. As Romans 8:15 reminds us, we have received the Spirit of adoption, by which we cry out, 'Abba, Father!' And Galatians 4:7 confirms that since we are children, we are also heirs through God. Our shared spiritual lineage in Christ outweighs every difference—cultural, social, or denominational. We belong together, eternally.

Application

Today, focus on operating from your primary identity: being a named member of God’s family. When you encounter a fellow believer, whether in church or online, consciously acknowledge them as a sibling, not just a stranger. Let the security of your divine belonging—knowing you are named by God—silence the anxiety of needing approval from the world.

Father, thank You for being the source of all life and love. Thank You for naming us and bringing us into Your whole family. Help us to live out the unity that identity provides, loving our brothers and sisters as fellow heirs. Amen.
