  1. Know this day that it is not your children who have known and seen the discipline of the LORD your God: His greatness, His mighty hand, and His outstretched arm;

  2. the signs and works He did in Egypt to Pharaoh king of Egypt and all his land;

  3. what He did to the Egyptian army and horses and chariots when He made the waters of the Red Sea engulf them as they pursued you, and how He destroyed them completely, even to this day;

  4. what He did for you in the wilderness until you reached this place;

  5. and what He did in the midst of all the Israelites to Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab the Reubenite, when the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, their households, their tents, and every living thing that belonged to them.

  6. For it is your own eyes that have seen every great work that the LORD has done.

  7. You shall therefore keep every commandment I am giving you today, so that you may have the strength to go in and possess the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess,

  8. and so that you may live long in the land that the LORD swore to your fathers to give them and their descendants, a land flowing with milk and honey.

  9. I will be his Father, and he will be My son. When he does wrong, I will discipline him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men.

  10. But My loving devotion will never be removed from him as I removed it from Saul, whom I moved out of your way.

  11. When Your people Israel are defeated before an enemy because they have sinned against You, and they return to You and confess Your name, praying and pleading before You in this temple,

  12. then may You hear from heaven and forgive the sin of Your people Israel. May You restore them to the land You gave to them and their fathers.

  13. When the skies are shut and there is no rain because Your people have sinned against You, and they pray toward this place and confess Your name, and they turn from their sins because You have afflicted them,

  14. then may You hear from heaven and forgive the sin of Your servants, Your people Israel, so that You may teach them the good way in which they should walk. May You send rain on the land that You gave Your people as an inheritance.

  15. When famine or plague comes upon the land, or blight or mildew or locusts or grasshoppers, or when their enemies besiege them in their cities, whatever plague or sickness may come,

  16. then may whatever prayer or petition Your people Israel make—each knowing his own afflictions and spreading out his hands toward this temple—

  17. be heard by You from heaven, Your dwelling place. And may You forgive and repay each man according to all his ways, since You know his heart—for You alone know the hearts of men—

  18. so that they may fear You and walk in Your ways all the days they live in the land that You gave to our fathers.

  19. If I close the sky so there is no rain, or if I command the locust to devour the land, or if I send a plague among My people,

  20. and if My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.

  21. Blessed is the man You discipline, O LORD, and teach from Your law,

  22. to grant him relief from days of trouble, until a pit is dug for the wicked.

  23. Many times He rescued them, but they were bent on rebellion and sank down in their iniquity.

  24. Nevertheless He heard their cry; He took note of their distress.

  25. Fools, in their rebellious ways, and through their iniquities, suffered affliction.
