  1. If men are quarreling and one strikes the other with a stone or a fist, and he does not die but is confined to bed,

  2. then the one who struck him shall go unpunished, as long as the other can get up and walk around outside with his staff. Nevertheless, he must compensate the man for his lost work and see that he is completely healed.

  3. If men who are fighting strike a pregnant woman and her child is born prematurely, but there is no further injury, he shall surely be fined as the woman’s husband demands and as the court allows.

  4. But if a serious injury results, then you must require a life for a life—

  5. eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,

  6. burn for burn, wound for wound, and stripe for stripe.

  7. If a man strikes and blinds the eye of his manservant or maidservant, he must let the servant go free as compensation for the eye.

  8. And if he knocks out the tooth of his manservant or maidservant, he must let the servant go free as compensation for the tooth.

  9. If a case is too difficult for you to judge, whether the controversy within your gates is regarding bloodshed, lawsuits, or assaults, you must go up to the place the LORD your God will choose.

  10. You are to go to the Levitical priests and to the judge who presides at that time. Inquire of them, and they will give you a verdict in the case.

  11. You must abide by the verdict they give you at the place the LORD will choose. Be careful to do everything they instruct you,

  12. according to the terms of law they give and the verdict they proclaim. Do not turn aside to the right or to the left from the decision they declare to you.

  13. But the man who acts presumptuously, refusing to listen either to the priest who stands there to serve the LORD your God, or to the judge, must be put to death. You must purge the evil from Israel.

  14. You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye and tooth for tooth.’

  15. But I tell you not to resist an evil person. If someone slaps you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also;
