  1. Behold, this have I found, saith the Preacher, laying one thing to another, to find out the account;

  2. which my soul still seeketh, but I have not found: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.

  3. Moreover Jehovah said, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with outstretched necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet;

  4. therefore the Lord will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and Jehovah will lay bare their secret parts.

  5. In that day the Lord will take away the beauty of their anklets, and the cauls, and the crescents;

  6. the pendants, and the bracelets, and the mufflers;

  7. the headtires, and the ankle chains, and the sashes, and the perfume-boxes, and the amulets;

  8. the rings, and the nose-jewels;

  9. the festival robes, and the mantles, and the shawls, and the satchels;

  10. the hand-mirrors, and the fine linen, and the turbans, and the veils.

  11. And it shall come to pass, that instead of sweet spices there shall be rottenness; and instead of a girdle, a rope; and instead of well set hair, baldness; and instead of a robe, a girding of sackcloth; branding instead of beauty.

  12. And seven women shall take hold of one man in that day, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name; take thou away our reproach.

  13. In that day shall the Egyptians be like unto women; and they shall tremble and fear because of the shaking of the hand of Jehovah of hosts, which he shaketh over them.

  14. Rise up, ye women that are at ease, andhear my voice; ye careless daughters, give ear unto my speech.

  15. For days beyond a year shall ye be troubled, ye careless women; for the vintage shall fail, the ingathering shall not come.

  16. Tremble, ye women that are at ease; be troubled, ye careless ones; strip you, and make you bare, and gird sackcloth upon your loins.

  17. They shall smite upon the breasts for the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vine.

  18. Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, these may forget, yet will not I forget thee.

  19. Can a virgin forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number.

  20. The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead the dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink-offerings unto other gods, that they may provoke me to anger.

  21. Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, and the young men and the old together; for I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow.

  22. A sword is upon their horses, and upon their chariots, and upon all the mingled people that are in the midst of her; and they shall become as women: a sword is upon her treasures, and they shall be robbed.

  23. The mighty men of Babylon have forborne to fight, they remain in their strongholds; their might hath failed; they are become as women: her dwelling-places are set on fire; her bars are broken.

  24. Jehovah is righteous; for I have rebelled against his commandment: Hear, I pray you, all ye peoples, and behold my sorrow: My virgins and my young men are gone into captivity.

  25. The youth and the old man lie on the ground in the streets; My virgins and my young men are fallen by the sword: Thou hast slain them in the day of thine anger; thou hast slaughtered, and not pitied.
