Dressing for the Life You Want

Have you ever walked out the door only to realize you’re wearing the wrong clothes for the weather? You wouldn't wear a heavy parka to the beach or flip-flops in a snowstorm. In our spiritual lives, we often try to face the day wearing our old, messy habits instead of the new identity God has given us. In Ephesians 4:22-24, we are reminded that living for God requires a deliberate change of wardrobe for the soul.

Paul gives us a direct and powerful command in Romans 13:14, which says, "But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.." The Greek word for "put on" is endýō. It’s a beautiful picture of "sinking into" a garment. Think of it like wrapping yourself in a warm, clean robe. We aren't just trying to act like Jesus through our own effort; we are choosing to wrap ourselves in His character, His strength, and His righteousness every single morning.

But there’s a second half to this instruction. We are told not to make "provision" for the flesh. The word used here is prónoia, which means "forethought" or "planning ahead." It’s like trying to go on a diet while keeping a secret stash of candy in your car. If we leave the door cracked for our old mistakes, we eventually walk through it. Just as Galatians 3:27 says we are baptized into Christ, we must stop planning for the very things He died to save us from.

Application

Today, take a look at your 'supply lines.' Are there apps, places, or specific times of day where you find yourself making 'provision' for old habits? Instead of just trying to resist temptation when it hits, try cutting off the planning phase. Delete the app, change your route, or start your morning by specifically asking the Lord to clothe you in His patience and peace before you even check your phone.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the new life You’ve given me. Help me to sink deep into Your character today and give me the wisdom to stop planning for my old, sinful ways. Let others see Jesus in me. Amen.
