The Power of 'But If Not'

Have you ever prayed for something so hard, only to feel like the answer was a "no" or a "not yet"? It’s easy to trust God when the sun is shining and the bills are paid. But what happens when the fire gets hot and the rescue hasn't arrived? Matthew 10:28 gives us a perspective that changes how we handle the heat.

In Daniel 3:18, which says, "But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.," we find three young men standing before a literal furnace. They knew God was capable of saving them, but they made a radical choice to follow Him regardless of the outcome. This wasn't a lack of faith; it was the highest form of it. They weren't following God for a reward; they were following Him because of who He is.

The Aramaic word for "if" here is hên. It sets up a condition that changes everything. They weren't just saying "if God is busy," they were saying "even if the outcome is our death." They refused to pĕlach, which means to render religious service or homage to anything else. As Romans 8:38-39 reminds us, nothing can separate us from His love, even if our current situation feels like a furnace. Their loyalty was tied to God's character, not His to-do list.

Application

Today, look at your "if" statements. Are you saying, "I'll trust God IF He fixes my crisis"? Try swapping your "if" for "even if." Identify one area where you've been demanding a specific result and tell God, "I trust You even if things don't go my way."

Lord, thank You that Your goodness doesn't depend on my circumstances. Give me the courage to stand firm and worship You alone, even when the fire is hot. My life and my future are in Your hands. Amen.
