The Wilderness Years
Forty years of wandering in the desert test Israel's faith and prepare a new generation to enter the promised land.
- Numbers 1:1c. 1490 BC
ADONAI spoke to Moshe in the Sinai Desert, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month of the second year after they had left the land of Egypt. He said,
- Numbers 1:2c. 1490 BC
"Take a census of the entire assembly of the people of Isra'el, by clans and families. Record the names of all the men
- Numbers 1:3c. 1490 BC
twenty years old and over who are subject to military service in Isra'el. You and Aharon are to enumerate them company by company.
- Numbers 1:4c. 1490 BC
Take with you from each tribe someone who is head of a clan.
- Numbers 1:5c. 1490 BC
These are the men to take with you: From Re'uven, Elitzur the son of Sh'de'ur;
- Numbers 1:6c. 1490 BC
From Shim'on, Shlumi'el the son of Tzurishaddai;
- Numbers 1:7c. 1490 BC
From Y'hudah, Nachshon the son of 'Amminadav;
- Numbers 1:8c. 1490 BC
From Yissakhar, N'tan'el the son of Tzu'ar;
- Numbers 1:9c. 1490 BC
From Z'vulun, Eli'av the son of Helon.
- Numbers 1:10c. 1490 BC
Of the children of Yosef: From Efrayim, Elishama the son of 'Ammihud; From M'nasheh, Gamli'el the son of P'dahtzur.
- Numbers 1:11c. 1490 BC
From Binyamin, Avidan the son of Gid'oni;
- Numbers 1:12c. 1490 BC
From Dan, Achi'ezer the son of 'Ammishaddai;
- Numbers 1:13c. 1490 BC
From Asher, Pag'i'el the son of 'Okhran;
- Numbers 1:14c. 1490 BC
From Gad, Elyasaf the son of De'u'el;
- Numbers 1:15c. 1490 BC
From Naftali, Achira the son of 'Enan."
- Numbers 1:16c. 1490 BC
These were the ones called from the assembly, the chiefs of their fathers'clans and heads of thousands in Isra'el.
- Numbers 1:17c. 1490 BC
So Moshe and Aharon took these men who had been designated by name;
- Numbers 1:18c. 1490 BC
and, on the first day of the second month, they gathered the whole assembly to state their genealogies by families and clans and recorded the names of all those twenty years old and over, as well as their total numbers.
- Numbers 1:19c. 1490 BC
Moshe counted them in the Sinai Desert, just as ADONAI had ordered him.
- Numbers 1:20c. 1490 BC
The men twenty years old and over who were subject to military service were recorded by name, family and clan, starting with the descendants of Re'uven, Isra'el's firstborn. Here are the totals:
- Numbers 1:21c. 1490 BC
Descendants of Re'uven 46,500
- Numbers 1:22c. 1490 BC
Descendants of Shim'on 59,300
- Numbers 1:23c. 1490 BC
Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Simeon, were fifty and nine thousand and three hundred.
