  1. These were the gatekeepers: Shallum, Akkub, Talmon, Ahiman, and their relatives.

  2. Shallum was their chief; he was previously stationed at the King’s Gate on the east side. These were the gatekeepers from the camp of the Levites.

  12. Some of them were in charge of the articles used in worship, to count them whenever they were brought in or taken out.

  13. Others were put in charge of the furnishings and other articles of the sanctuary, as well as the fine flour, wine, oil, frankincense, and spices.

  14. And some of the sons of the priests mixed the spices.

  15. A Levite named Mattithiah, the firstborn son of Shallum the Korahite, was entrusted with baking the bread.

  16. Some of their Kohathite brothers were responsible for preparing the rows of the showbread every Sabbath.

  17. As their brothers the descendants of Aaron did, they also cast lots in the presence of King David and of Zadok, Ahimelech, and the heads of the families of the priests and Levites—the family heads and their younger brothers alike.

  18. They cast lots for each gate, according to their families, young and old alike.

  19. The lot for the East Gate fell to Shelemiah. Then lots were cast for his son Zechariah, a wise counselor, and the lot for the North Gate fell to him.

  20. The lot for the South Gate fell to Obed-edom, and the lot for the storehouses to his sons.

  21. The lots for the West Gate and the Shallecheth Gate on the ascending highway fell to Shuppim and Hosah. There were guards stationed at every watch.

  22. Each day there were six Levites on the east, four on the north, four on the south, and two pairs at the storehouse.

  23. As for the court on the west, there were four at the highway and two at the court.

  24. These were the divisions of the gatekeepers who were descendants of Korah and Merari.
