When Clear Words Turn Foreign

Tsav latsav, tsav latsav; kav lakav, kav lakav. To the elite mockers of Jerusalem, the prophet’s message sounded like a nursery rhyme—tedious, childish, endlessly repetitive Isaiah 28:10. "Line upon line, precept upon precept," they sneered. They were bored with the straightforward instructions of God. They wanted something grander, something deeper, something less embarrassingly simple.

God’s response in Isaiah 28:11 is a sobering divine irony: "For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people."

The Hebrew word for "stammering" is lâʻêg H3934, which carries the dual meaning of stammering and mocking. God promised that if they dismissed His clear, gentle instruction as childish babble, He would change the dialect. He would speak to them through the harsh, guttural tongue of the invading Assyrian army—shouted commands in a foreign language they could not comprehend. If they would not listen to the clear voice of His grace, they would be forced to hear the incomprehensible voice of His rod.

This reveals a terrifying law of the spiritual life: God’s Word is never neutral. In the very next verse, God offers them margēʻāh H4774—a word for "refreshing" so rare it appears nowhere else in the Old Testament Isaiah 28:12. Divine rest was sitting right there in the simple, line-upon-line obedience they despised. But because they refused to listen, the very instructions designed to build them up became a tripwire. Isaiah warns that they would "fall backward" (kāšal H3782), broken, snared, and taken Isaiah 28:13. The ladder became an obstacle.

We step onto this same dangerous ground whenever we treat basic obedience as mundane. We ignore the clear, quiet commands we already know—to forgive, to tell the truth, to walk humbly—while complaining that God’s Word feels dry or silent.
