Giving Your Best When Others Don't Understand

Have you ever given a gift from the heart, only to have someone dismiss it as "too much" or a "waste"? It is painful when a sincere act of love is met with cold, practical critique. This is precisely what happened to the woman who honored Jesus with a vial of costly perfume shortly before His death. While onlookers saw only financial loss, Jesus recognized a beautiful sacrifice.

In Mark 14:6, Jesus steps in as her defender, saying, "And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me.." While the disciples scrutinized the price of the ointment, Jesus focused on the posture of her soul. He used the Greek word kalós to describe her work. This term transcends mere utility; it describes that which is noble, honorable, and inherently excellent. While others were calculating costs, Jesus was admiring a spiritual masterpiece.

This story reminds us that devotion is not measured by a spreadsheet. The world—and often our own inner critic—questions if our time in prayer or small acts of service are truly worth it. But as Jesus teaches in Matthew 10:42, even a cup of cold water given in His name carries weight in eternity. Jesus does not seek efficiency; He desires a heart that is unreserved in its love for Him. To Him, the érgon of a loving heart is never a waste.

Application

Identify one way you can show "extravagant" love to Jesus today. It might be taking ten minutes to sit in His presence or performing a kind deed for someone who cannot repay you. Do not worry if it seems impractical; if done for Him, He sees it as beautiful.
