Breaking Free from the Spiritual Checklist

Have you ever felt like your relationship with God is more about a checklist than a conversation? We often weigh ourselves down with legalistic requirements, trying to earn a seat at the table Jesus has already prepared. It is exhausting to live as if we must still prove our worth through our own efforts.

In Colossians 2:20, Paul asks a pointed question: "Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances," He reminds us that putting faith in Jesus is more than starting a new religion; it is a spiritual death. We have died to the old way of doing things—the rudiments of a world that measures value by performance.

The Greek word for rudiments is stoicheîon, referring to the basic, elementary components of a system. Paul suggests that reaching for God through human rules is like a scholar returning to preschool. Why regress to the basics of performance when you possess the fullness of Christ? When we become dogmatízō, or "subject to ordinances," we act as if we are still governed by worldly systems instead of God's grace. As Galatians 5:1 reminds us, we are called to stand fast in the liberty Christ has given us.

Application

Today, identify one "unwritten rule" you follow to feel accepted by God. Perhaps you feel you must achieve a certain mood or complete a task before you are "good enough" to pray. Stop and remind yourself that you are dead to those systems. Your identity is found in Christ's perfection, not your own efforts.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the freedom found in Your finished work. Help me to stop trying to earn a love that You have already freely given. May I rest in Your sufficiency today. Amen.
