Building a Life That Won't Shake

Ever feel like you’re just one bad day away from a total collapse? We’ve all been there. Life has a way of throwing sudden floods our way—unexpected bills, health scares, or relationship drama. Jesus knew these storms were coming, which is why He gave us a blueprint for a life that can actually stand its ground.

In Luke 6:48, Jesus describes a wise builder: "He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock." Notice that this man didn't just find a nice spot and start laying bricks. He did the hard work first. The Greek word for "digged" is skáptō, which means to excavate or laboriously remove the loose soil. He didn't stop at the surface; he kept going until he hit something solid. He wasn't looking for the easiest way to build, but the safest.

This is about more than just knowing facts about God; it's about active obedience. As James 1:22 reminds us, we shouldn't just be hearers of the Word, but doers. Digging deep means taking the time to let Jesus’s teachings actually change how we handle our stress, our words, and our choices. When we do that, we are building on the only foundation that 1 Corinthians 3:11 says can never be replaced: Jesus Christ Himself. When the storms of life hit, a life built on obedience simply will not be moved.

Application

Today, pick one area of your life where you have been 'hearing' God's advice but not yet 'doing' it. Maybe it is a prompt to forgive someone or a call to be more patient. Take one small, practical step of obedience in that specific area today. That is you digging deep and hitting the Rock.

Prayer

Lord, help me to do the hard work of obeying Your Word even when it is difficult. Build my life on Your truth so that I can stand firm through every storm. Amen.
