Study Notes for Psalms 134

Verse 1

which by night stand in the house of the LORD — The last of the fifteen Songs of degrees addresses 'servants' (ebed) who 'stand' (amad), the posture of service. Of the Levite singers it is written that 'they were employed in that work day and night' (1 Chr 9:33). Ps 135:1–2 repeats the call, 'Ye that stand in the house of the LORD'.

Verse 3

The LORD that made heaven and earth bless thee out of Zion — The plural 'ye' of vv.1–2 gives way to a single 'thee'. The title is the last of three in this group (Pss 121:2; 124:8; 134:3), and the source of the blessing is Zion, as in 'The LORD shall bless thee out of Zion' (Ps 128:5). Paul cites the Deliverer who 'shall come out of Sion' (Rom 11:26).
