Numbers 3 details the divine appointment and organization of the Levite tribe for service in the tabernacle, distinct from the Aaronic priesthood. It records a census of the Levite families—Gershonites, Kohathites, and Merarites—assigning each specific duties regarding the tabernacle's components. The chapter also establishes the Levites as a substitute for Israel's firstborn, instituting a redemption price for any firstborn exceeding the number of Levites.
And Nadab and Abihu died before Jehovah, when they offered strange fire before Jehovah, in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children; and Eleazar and Ithamar ministered in the priest’s office in the presence of Aaron their father.
And I, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel instead of all the first-born that openeth the womb among the children of Israel; and the Levites shall be mine:
for all the first-born are mine; on the day that I smote all the first-born in the land of Egypt I hallowed unto me all the first-born in Israel, both man and beast; mine they shall be: I am Jehovah.
Those that were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, even those that were numbered of them were seven thousand and five hundred.
And the charge of the sons of Gershon in the tent of meeting shall be the tabernacle, and the Tent, the covering thereof, and the screen for the door of the tent of meeting,
and the hangings of the court, and the screen for the door of the court, which is by the tabernacle, and by the altar round about, and the cords of it for all the service thereof.
And of Kohath was the family of the Amramites, and the family of the Izharites, and the family of the Hebronites, and the family of the Uzzielites: these are the families of the Kohathites.
And their charge shall be the ark, and the table, and the candlestick, and the altars, and the vessels of the sanctuary wherewith they minister, and the screen, and all the service thereof.
And Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest shall be prince of the princes of the Levites, and have the oversight of them that keep the charge of the sanctuary.
And the prince of the fathers’ house of the families of Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail: they shall encamp on the side of the tabernacle northward.
And the appointed charge of the sons of Merari shall be the boards of the tabernacle, and the bars thereof, and the pillars thereof, and the sockets thereof, and all the instruments thereof, and all the service thereof,
And those that encamp before the tabernacle eastward, before the tent of meeting toward the sunrising, shall be Moses, and Aaron and his sons, keeping the charge of the sanctuary for the charge of the children of Israel; and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death.
All that were numbered of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron numbered at the commandment of Jehovah, by their families, all the males from a month old and upward, were twenty and two thousand.
And Jehovah said unto Moses, Number all the first-born males of the children of Israel from a month old and upward, and take the number of their names.
And thou shalt take the Levites for me (I am Jehovah) instead of all the first-born among the children of Israel; and the cattle of the Levites instead of all the firstlings among the cattle of the children of Israel.
And all the first-born males according to the number of names, from a month old and upward, of those that were numbered of them, were twenty and two thousand two hundred and threescore and thirteen.
Take the Levites instead of all the first-born among the children of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of their cattle; and the Levites shall be mine: I am Jehovah.
And for the redemption of the two hundred and threescore and thirteen of the first-born of the children of Israel, that are over and above the number of the Levites,
from the first-born of the children of Israel took he the money, a thousand three hundred and threescore and five shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary:
and Moses gave the redemption-money unto Aaron and to his sons, according to the word of Jehovah, as Jehovah commanded Moses.

Verse 1
This genealogy establishes the line of the priesthood (Aaron) and the line of the lawgiver (Moses), providing the necessary context for the duties assigned in this chapter.
Verse 4
Nadab and Abihu had previously offered unauthorized fire (Lev. 10:1-2), resulting in their immediate deaths. This verse underscores the necessity of holiness and obedience for those serving in the sanctuary.
Verse 6
The Levites' role is strictly defined as assisting the priests (Aaron and his sons). They were responsible for the manual labor and maintenance of the Tabernacle structure, but not the sacrificial rituals.
Verse 10
The phrase 'the stranger that cometh nigh' refers to any non-priest (even a non-Levite) attempting to perform priestly duties. This protection of the sanctuary's holiness was enforced by the death penalty.
Verse 12
This is the theological rationale for the Levites' consecration. They are taken 'instead of all the firstborn' of Israel, signifying that God accepts their service as a sacrificial substitution.
Verse 13
The claim on the firstborn stems from the final plague in Egypt (Exod. 12), where God spared Israelite firstborn while claiming all others. The Levites fulfill this claim, redeeming the rest of the nation's firstborn.
Verse 15
Unlike the general census (Num. 1) which counted fighting men (20 years and up), the Levites were counted from one month old. This emphasizes that their service is a consecration from infancy, not merely a military duty.
Verse 25
The Gershonites were responsible for the lighter, soft materials of the Tabernacle: the coverings, curtains, and hangings. They pitched camp on the west side of the Tabernacle.
Verse 31
The Kohathites had the most sacred charge: the internal, holy furnishings (Ark, Table, Altars). Because of the extreme holiness of these items, they had to be carefully covered by the priests before the Kohathites could carry them (Num. 4).
Verse 32
Eleazar, the son of Aaron, was placed in charge of the Levite chiefs, particularly overseeing the Kohathites. This shows the direct administrative link between the priesthood and the custodians of the sanctuary's holiest objects.
Verse 36
The Merarites were responsible for the heavy, structural elements of the Tabernacle: the wooden frames, bars, pillars, and sockets. They pitched camp on the north side.
Verse 38
Moses, Aaron, and the priests encamped immediately east of the Tabernacle entrance. This placement served as the first line of defense, guarding the sacred entrance and ensuring no unauthorized person could approach the sanctuary.
Verse 39
The total number of Levite males (22,000) is rounded here. The individual clan counts (7,500 + 8,600 + 6,200) actually total 22,300. Scholars debate whether the number 22,000 reflects a scribal error or a purposeful rounding for the upcoming calculation.
Verse 43
The total number of firstborn Israelite males was 22,273. Since only 22,000 Levites were available for substitution (v. 39), there were 273 firstborn who required monetary redemption.
Verse 47
The redemption price of five shekels per person was a standard valuation for a male child (cf. Lev. 27:6). This money was paid to Aaron and his sons, compensating for the 273 firstborn not covered by the Levite substitution.
