Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

The word of Christ bestows immortality. But immortality is the companion of divinity, because divinity is immortal, and so immortality is the result of partaking in the divine nature.

Who was this?

A Roman scholar and priest, he was consecrated as pope in 251 by three bishops in opposition to Cornelius. He adopted a rigorous stance on penance for lapsed Christians. His theological writings are the first from Rome composed in Latin. He died in 258.
