Going After the One in the Field

Manoah prayed a direct, urgent prayer: Lord, let the man of God come again unto us, and teach us Judges 13:8. The text tells us that God "hearkened" (shāmaʿ H8085) to his voice. But when the Angel of God (malʼâk H4397) actually arrived, He didn't go to Manoah. He went right back to Manoah's wife, sitting alone in the open field (śādeh H7704) Judges 13:9.

Manoah was completely bypassed by the very answer he begged for.

It is a striking detail. The Hebrew word for "sat"—yāshab H3427—carries the weight of remaining, dwelling, or abiding in quietness. While Manoah was likely busy with domestic affairs or organizing his household, his wife was out in the solitude of the field, open and attentive. God answered Manoah’s prayer, but He honored his wife's quiet receptivity.

What happens next reveals Manoah’s true spiritual character. When his wife runs to tell him the Angel has returned, Manoah doesn't pull rank or demand that God come directly to him. Instead, the text says Manoah "arose, and went after (ʼachar H310) his wife" Judges 13:11. The Hebrew ʼachar literally means "behind." Manoah physically and spiritually steps behind his wife, following her toward the revelation she had already received.

When he stands before the Angel, Manoah doesn't say, "Now speak to me." He asks, "How shall we order (mishpāṭ H4941) the child, and how shall we do (maʿăśeh H4639) unto him?" Judges 13:12. He asks for the divine decree (mishpāṭ) and the concrete work (maʿăśeh) so they can carry it out together. His leadership was not about asserting authority; it was about stewardship of the truth his wife brought back from the field.

God often hearkens to our prayers not by handing us the master plan directly, but by speaking through someone sitting quietly near us—a spouse, a friend, or a colleague. True spiritual leadership is not demanding to be the primary source of insight. It is having the humility to arise, step behind the person holding the truth, and ask, "How do we obey this together?"
