Finding Your Joy on the Right Path

Have you ever known exactly what you should do, but found yourself lacking the motivation to actually do it? We often treat obedience like a chore—a heavy burden we feel forced to carry. We see God's rules and think only of what we might be missing. But the psalmist in Psalms 119:35 has a completely different perspective, seeing God's ways as a path of pure joy rather than a prison of restriction.

In Psalms 119:35, we read, "¶ Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight.." This isn't a prayer for God to override our will, but a humble cry for divine enablement to steer our lives. The Hebrew word for "make me to go" is dārak, which means to be led or directed along a specific trail. It acknowledges that while we might desire to follow God, we need His strength to actually take each step. We aren't meant to walk this road alone; as Philippians 2:13 reminds us, it is God who works in us both to will and to do His good pleasure.

The secret to this request is found in the word "delight." The Hebrew word ḥāp̄ēṣ means to be deeply pleased with or to have a heartfelt inclination toward something. It is not just "doing the right thing" out of obligation; it is finding genuine satisfaction in living according to our design. When we realize that God’s commandments are boundaries for our protection and pathways to our peace, duty transforms into desire. We begin to see that the path of holiness is the path to the most flourishing life possible.

Application

Today, identify one command of God that feels like a weight rather than a gift. Instead of trying to white-knuckle your way through it, pray this verse specifically for that situation: "Lord, make me to go in this path, because I want to find the joy You have hidden there." Ask Him to change your "have to" into a "get to."

Lord, I confess that my feet often wander or grow weary in doing good. Please lead me by Your Spirit and spark a new delight in Your Word today. Amen.
