Clean Feet for a Clear Walk

John 13:10

Have you ever spent a day walking outside in sandals? Even if you took a long shower that morning, by the time you get home, your feet are covered in dust and grime. You don't need to hop back into the bathtub to feel clean again, but you definitely need to rinse those feet before you step onto the carpet!

In John 13:10, Jesus uses this exact scenario to explain a deep spiritual truth: "Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.." He is showing us the difference between being saved and staying in fellowship. When He speaks of someone being "washed," He uses the Greek word loúō, which refers to a complete bath for the whole body. This is the one-time cleansing we receive the moment we trust in Christ. As Titus 3:5 tells us, it is the "washing of regeneration" that makes us right with God forever.

However, as we walk through this fallen world, we inevitably pick up the "dust" of daily sin—a sharp word to a spouse, a selfish thought, or a moment of pride. To handle this, Jesus says we need to níptō, which means to wash a specific part, like the hands or feet. This isn't about getting saved all over again; it's about daily confession. When we bring these small stains to Him, as encouraged in 1 John 1:9, we keep our relationship with Him fresh and unhindered.

Application

Today, take a moment for a spiritual "foot washing." Don't let the small sins of the day pile up. Spend two minutes in quiet prayer, asking the Lord to reveal any "dust" you've picked up, and thank Him for the grace that keeps you clean.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for washing me completely and making me Your own. Help me to be quick to repent today so that nothing stands in the way of our walk together. Amen.
