Don't Give Up Before the Miracle

Have you ever felt like you’ve reached your absolute limit? Maybe you’ve prayed for months about a difficult situation, but instead of getting better, it only seems to get worse. You start to wonder if God has forgotten your address or if He is the one intentionally making things hard. It’s a heavy, lonely place to be, and it is exactly where we find the king of Israel in today’s scripture.

In 2 Kings 6:33, the king is facing a horrific famine and a brutal siege that has left his people in despair. He is completely exhausted and angry. The text says, “And while he yet talked with them, behold, the messenger came down unto him: and he said, Behold, this evil is of the LORD; what should I wait for the LORD any longer?.” He was so blinded by his immediate pain that he decided there was no point in trusting God anymore. He didn’t realize that God’s miraculous provision was literally hours away. Often, our greatest temptation to quit comes right at the moment when God is about to move.

The king asked why he should “wait” any longer. The Hebrew word for wait here is yâḥal, which carries the idea of looking expectantly or hoping with endurance. Jehoram had lost his ability to hope. He correctly saw that God is sovereign over all circumstances, but he forgot that God is also redemptive. As Isaiah 40:31 encourages us, waiting isn’t just passing time; it is an active posture of faith that trusts God’s heart even when we cannot see His hand.

Application

Today, take a moment to look at the specific situation that makes you want to quit. Instead of walking away in frustration, tell God, “I don’t understand this delay, but I choose to wait expectantly anyway.” Remind yourself that the very next chapter of your life could hold the abundance you have been praying for.

Prayer

Lord, help me to hold on when I am tired and to trust Your timing when I feel like giving up. Give me the grace to wait for Your perfect deliverance today. Amen.
