Stepping Down From the Judge's Seat

Romans 14:10

Have you ever caught yourself rolling your eyes at how another Christian lives out their faith? Maybe it’s a choice they make about their lifestyle or a habit you don't agree with. It is so easy to slip into the role of a referee in someone else’s life, but today’s scripture gives us a much-needed reality check.

In Romans 14:10, the Bible asks us directly: "But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.." The Greek word for judge used here is krínō, which means to pass sentence or condemn. When we look down on a fellow believer, we are essentially trying to sit in a seat that doesn't belong to us. We’re all on the same team, yet we often spend more time critiquing our teammates than focusing on our own walk.

Paul reminds us that we will all eventually stand before the bēma, or "judgment seat" of Christ. This isn't about losing our salvation, but about an evaluation of our faithfulness. Knowing that we each have our own personal appointment with Jesus should make us much more concerned with our own hearts than our neighbor's habits. As Romans 14:12 reminds us, every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

Application

Today, when you feel a judgmental thought starting to form about a friend or church member, stop and offer a quick prayer for them instead. Shift your focus away from their choices and ask God to show you one area where you can grow in your own devotion to Him.

Prayer

Lord, help me to trade my critical spirit for a heart of humility. Remind me that You are the only true Judge, and help me to love my brothers and sisters just as they are. Amen.
