Prayed For Before You Existed

Imagine being included in a crucial plan years before you were even born. That’s exactly what Jesus did for you. In the solemn hours before His crucifixion, Jesus prayed the High Priestly Prayer, interceding not just for His immediate circle, but for a global, future community.

The scope of Christ’s love is breathtaking. He had just finished praying for the disciples who were standing beside Him, but then He intentionally broadened His focus. He declared: ¶ Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;. This is stunning assurance: if you believe in Jesus today, you were a direct object of this prayer. This reveals Jesus’ role as our eternal High Priest, who Hebrews 7:25 to make intercession for us.

But how did Jesus intend for future believers to be reached? "Through their word." The Greek word for "word" here is logos (*lógos*), meaning the authoritative message and testimony of the apostles. Our faith—the active, vital trust described by the word pisteuō (*pisteúō*)—is ignited only by hearing this truth. This is why Paul later wrote that Romans 10:17.

Application

Today, rest in the profound security that Jesus personally prayed for your faith and salvation. Then, recognize that you are now part of the chain of transmission. The *lógos* reached you through someone else; who needs to hear it from you? Be intentional about sharing the reliable, saving message of Jesus Christ with a friend or neighbor today.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for foreknowing and interceding for me. Strengthen my trust in Your word and give me the courage to share Your message faithfully, so that Your prayer for future believers continues to be fulfilled. Amen.
