Our God Rides Forth: The Purpose of His Power

When the world around us feels chaotic, and overwhelming obstacles rise like tidal waves, it’s natural to wonder if God is angry, or perhaps if He is simply indifferent. The prophet Habakkuk wrestled with similar questions as he faced the terrifying prospect of the Babylonian invasion. Yet, in the midst of his magnificent prayer (Habakkuk 3), he finds a powerful, stabilizing truth about God’s nature.

In Habakkuk 3:8, the prophet asks a series of rhetorical questions, painting a picture of God as a majestic, unstoppable Divine Warrior: “Was the LORD displeased against the rivers? [was] thine anger against the rivers? [was] thy wrath against the sea, that thou didst ride upon thine horses [and] thy chariots of salvation?”

Habakkuk wasn’t suggesting God had a random temper tantrum against the local river. The implied answer to those questions is a resounding “No.” The rivers and the sea—which often symbolize chaos and insurmountable obstacles in scripture—were not the targets of God’s wrath. Instead, they were merely props in His grand, redemptive play, instantly subject to His will (think of the parting of the Red Sea in Exodus 14:21).

The true purpose of God’s awe-inspiring power is revealed in the final phrase: He rides forth on His “chariots of salvation.” God’s mighty intervention is never arbitrary; it is meticulously directed toward the deliverance and well-being of His people. The Hebrew word for “salvation” (yᵉshûwʻâh) encompasses rescue, victory, and aid. God’s power serves His promise.

What are the “rivers” and “seas” threatening to overwhelm your life today? Is it financial pressure, relentless grief, or a conflict that seems impossible to resolve? This verse assures us that God is not a distant, passive observer. He is actively engaged, and His power—which controls every force in the universe—is directed toward your rescue. We don’t have to wonder about the purpose of God’s might; it is always bent toward bringing about His ultimate deliverance. Trust that the Divine Warrior is riding forth on your behalf, carrying the victory you need.
