  1. Then He told them a parable: “The ground of a certain rich man produced an abundance.

  2. So he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, since I have nowhere to store my crops?’

  3. Then he said, ‘This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and will build bigger ones, and there I will store up all my grain and my goods.

  4. Then I will say to myself, “You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take it easy. Eat, drink, and be merry!”’

  5. But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be required of you. Then who will own what you have accumulated?’

  6. Now there was a rich man dressed in purple and fine linen, who lived each day in joyous splendor.

  7. And a beggar named Lazarus lay at his gate, covered with sores

  8. and longing to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.

  9. One day the beggar died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. And the rich man also died and was buried.

  10. In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham from afar, with Lazarus by his side.

  11. So he cried out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue. For I am in agony in this fire.’

  12. But Abraham answered, ‘Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things. But now he is comforted here, while you are in agony.
