  1. If a man gives his neighbor money or goods for safekeeping and they are stolen from the neighbor’s house, the thief, if caught, must pay back double.

  2. If the thief is not found, the owner of the house must appear before the judges to determine whether he has taken his neighbor’s property.

  3. In all cases of illegal possession of an ox, a donkey, a sheep, a garment, or any lost item that someone claims, ‘This is mine,’ both parties shall bring their cases before the judges. The one whom the judges find guilty must pay back double to his neighbor.

  5. Regarding any holy thing he has harmed, he must make restitution by adding a fifth of its value to it and giving it to the priest, who will make atonement on his behalf with the ram as a guilt offering, and he will be forgiven.

  6. or anything else about which he has sworn falsely. He must make restitution in full, add a fifth of the value, and pay it to the owner on the day he acknowledges his guilt.

  7. Then he must bring to the priest his guilt offering to the LORD: an unblemished ram of proper value from the flock.

  8. Men do not despise the thief if he steals to satisfy his hunger.

  9. Yet if caught, he must pay sevenfold; he must give up all the wealth of his house.
