He that striketh his bondman, or bondwoman, with a rod, and they die under his hands, shall be guilty of the crime.

Yet so, that they exceed not the number of forty: lest thy brother depart shamefully torn before thy eyes.

If he scourge, let him kill at once, and not laugh at the pains of the innocent.

But beware of men. For they will deliver you up in councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues.
