A New Breath of Life

Have you ever felt completely drained, like you’re just going through the motions? The disciples knew that feeling well. They were hiding behind locked doors, paralyzed by fear and uncertainty after the crucifixion, wondering if their journey with Jesus had come to a dead end.

But everything changed when the risen Lord stood among them. In John 20:22, we read, "And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:." This wasn't just a symbolic gesture; it was a moment of new creation. The Greek word for "breathed on" is emphysáō. It’s a very specific word that points us back to the beginning of the Bible. In Genesis 2:7, God used this same kind of life-giving breath to turn a lump of clay into a living soul. Jesus was doing it again—He was giving His followers a spiritual "second wind" to face a world that had rejected Him.

Jesus then gave a command: "Receive ye." This comes from the Greek word lambánō, which means more than just being a passive bystander. It’s an invitation to "take hold of" or "grasp" what is being offered. He was telling them that they didn't have to carry out His mission in their own strength. By giving them the Holy Spirit, He was providing the peace, wisdom, and power they needed for the road ahead. They weren't just survivors of a tragedy anymore; they were a new creation empowered by the very life of God.

Application

Today, when you feel your own strength running low, take a moment to pause. Remember that as a believer, you aren't a self-powered machine. You are a temple of the Spirit. Before you start your next task or enter a difficult conversation, stop and ask the Lord for a fresh "breath" of His peace and guidance. Intentionally "take hold" of the help He has already placed within you.

Lord Jesus, thank You for not leaving us to struggle on our own. Fill us today with Your Holy Spirit so we can live for You with joy and courage. Breathe Your life into our tired hearts. Amen.
