The Master Designer of Your Senses

Have you ever paused to consider the miracle occurring right now as you read these words or hear the sounds of the world around you? It is easy to view our ability to see and hear as mere biological machinery. However, Scripture reveals a more profound story behind our senses than random chance.

In Proverbs 20:12, we are reminded of this divine origin: "¶ The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them.." This is more than a statement of anatomy; it is a declaration of ownership and purpose. The Hebrew word for 'made' is ʻāśâ, describing a deliberate act of fashioning with a specific goal in mind. God did not simply assemble us; He meticulously designed your senses so you could interact with His creation and, ultimately, with Him.

This truth transforms our self-perception. If the LORD fashioned the 'hearing ear' (ʾōzen), then He is the ultimate source of the wisdom we are designed to perceive. As Psalm 94:9 reminds us, the One who planted the ear surely hears us. Our senses are gifts intended to discern spiritual truth. When we use our eyes for Scripture or our ears for godly counsel, we employ God’s tools for their highest calling.

Application

Today, practice a sensory reset. For five minutes, silence your environment and digital distractions. Use your 'hearing ear' to listen for God’s still, small voice in prayer, and use your 'seeing eye' to identify specific evidence of His goodness in your immediate surroundings.
