God is Closer Than You Think

Have you ever felt completely alone, like you're stuck in a "wilderness" season of life? Maybe you’re facing a tough transition, or perhaps you’re dealing with the consequences of a bad decision. Jacob felt exactly like that. He was on the run, sleeping in the dirt with a stone for a pillow, probably wondering if God had forgotten him entirely.

But right in the middle of his isolation, God gave him a dream to show him he wasn't alone. In Genesis 28:12, we see this incredible vision: And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.. This wasn't just a random dream; it was a divine promise. It showed Jacob—and it shows us—that heaven isn't a million miles away. There is a direct, open connection between God’s throne and your current circumstances, no matter how messy they feel.

The Hebrew word for ladder is sullâm, which describes a solid, fixed stairway or ramp. It wasn't a flimsy rope ladder that might break; it was a permanent, stable bridge. Jacob also saw măl’âk, which literally means "messengers." These weren't just standing still; they were actively moving, carrying out God's business on earth and bringing His help to those who need it. As John 1:51 reminds us, Jesus is the ultimate bridge who brings us into God's presence every single day.

Application

Today, whenever you feel overwhelmed or lonely, stop and say out loud, "God is in this place." You don't have to perform or climb a mountain to reach Him. Because of His grace, the way is already open, and His help is already on the move in your life.

Prayer

Lord, thank You that I am never truly alone. Even when I feel like I'm in a wilderness, remind me that Your presence is right here with me and Your help is never far away. Amen.
