Unceasing Care: Kept and Watered Every Moment

Life sometimes feels like we are fragile plants planted in uncertain soil. We worry about drought, hidden pests, and the darkness of the night. But the prophet Isaiah offers a profound counter-truth: we are not left to fend for ourselves. We are a precious vineyard, and the Gardener is God Himself, the one who guarantees our flourishing.

In Isaiah 27:3, the Lord (or YHWH, the covenant God) makes a powerful, threefold promise of security. First, He promises personal ownership and protection: “I the LORD do keep it.” The Hebrew word for “keep” (nâtsar) means to guard diligently, like a watchman on a wall. God Himself is our tireless guardian.

Second, He promises constant sustenance: “I will water it every moment.” The phrase “every moment” (rega') suggests a care so immediate and frequent it happens in the blink of an eye. God’s provision is not seasonal or sporadic; it is continuous spiritual nourishment, ensuring we bear fruit and remain vitally connected to Him, echoing Christ’s teaching in John 15:5.

Finally, He guarantees unceasing vigilance, stating the purpose of His watch: “lest [any] hurt it, I will keep it night and day.” This echoes the beautiful assurance that our Keeper neither slumbers nor sleeps (Psalm 121:4). The promise is absolute and covers all times and circumstances: I the LORD do keep it; I will water it every moment: lest [any] hurt it, I will keep it night and day.

This verse invites us to rest in divine sovereignty. If God is watering us every moment, we can stop frantically trying to generate our own growth. If He is keeping us night and day (night and day), we can lay down the burden of constant self-protection. When anxiety tries to creep in—whether it’s worry about the future or fear of spiritual attack—we remember that the Lord’s watch is ceaseless. Our security is not in our fluctuating efforts, but in His eternal, moment-by-moment commitment to our preservation. We are held securely in the hand of the faithful Gardener.
