Commentary for Joshua 11:15

Joshua 11:15 is a verse that encapsulates the theme of obedience and faithfulness to God's commands, which is a central motif throughout the book of Joshua. This verse specifically references the chain of command from God to Moses to Joshua, emphasizing the importance of adhering to divine instructions. It serves as a historical record of Joshua's successful campaign to conquer the Promised Land, demonstrating that his victories were not due to his own military prowess alone but because he followed the Lord's directives without deviation.

The historical context of this verse is set during the Israelite conquest of Canaan, after Joshua had defeated a coalition of Canaanite kings. The verse serves as a conclusion to the account of these military campaigns, highlighting that Joshua was meticulous in carrying out everything that the Lord had commanded through Moses. This reflects the broader narrative of the book, which shows the Israelites transitioning from a period of wandering in the wilderness to settling in the land promised to their ancestors, a transition guided by divine mandate.

In essence, Joshua 11:15 underscores the significance of obedience to God's word as a means of fulfilling His purposes and achieving success in His eyes. It also reinforces the continuity of leadership and the responsibility of each leader to pass on and enforce the commands of God, ensuring the faithfulness of the community as a whole. This verse serves as a testament to the reliability of God's promises when His people remain obedient to His will.
