¶ Now the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel, (for he [was] the firstborn; but, forasmuch as he defiled his father's bed, his birthright was given unto the sons of Joseph the son of Israel: and the genealogy is not to be reckoned after the birthright.

Complete Jewish Bible:

The sons of Re'uven the firstborn of Isra'el - he was the firstborn, but because he defiled his father's bed, his birthright was given to the sons of Yosef the son of Isra'el, though not in such a way as for him to be regarded in the genealogy as the firstborn.

Berean Standard Bible:

These were the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel. Though he was the firstborn, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph son of Israel, because Reuben defiled his father’s bed. So he is not reckoned according to birthright.

American Standard Version:

And the sons of Reuben the first-born of Israel (for he was the first-born; but, forasmuch as he defiled his father’s couch, his birthright was given unto the sons of Joseph the son of Israel; and the genealogy is not to be reckoned after the birthright.

Commentary for 1 Chronicles 5:1

1 Chronicles 5:1 is a verse that addresses the complex family dynamics and the consequential shifts in inheritance and leadership among the tribes of Israel. The verse begins by acknowledging Reuben as the firstborn son of Israel (Jacob), which traditionally would have granted him a place of prominence and a double portion of the inheritance according to the customs of the time.

However, the verse explicitly mentions Reuben's serious transgression—defiling his father's bed—a reference to the incident recorded in Genesis 35:22, where Reuben slept with Bilhah, one of his father Jacob's concubines. This act of disrespect towards his father had lasting implications for Reuben and his descendants. As a result of this sin, Reuben forfeited his birthright, which was then transferred to the sons of Joseph, another of Jacob's sons.

The verse underscores the principle that moral conduct and respect for authority are critical for leadership and blessings within the Israelite community. It also reflects the theme of divine justice, where actions have consequences that can transcend generations. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of genealogies in the chronicler's era, as they were not merely records of lineage but also carried significant implications for tribal identity, land inheritance, and priestly duties.

In summary, 1 Chronicles 5:1 serves as a historical footnote explaining why the tribe of Reuben, despite being the firstborn, did not enjoy the full privileges of the birthright, which instead were bestowed upon the descendants of Joseph. This shift in the line of succession and inheritance is a pivotal moment in the history of Israel, reflecting the interplay between human actions and divine decrees.
