Commentary for Ezekiel 45:1

Ezekiel 45:1 is a verse from the Old Testament that outlines specific instructions for the division of the land among the Israelites upon their return from exile. This verse is part of a larger section in the book of Ezekiel (chapters 40-48) that deals with the restoration of Israel, including the rebuilding of the Temple and the reorganization of the people's communal and religious life. The historical context is set after the Babylonian Exile, when the people of Judah were allowed to return to their homeland by the Persian king Cyrus the Great.

In this verse, God commands the Israelites, through the prophet Ezekiel, that when they divide the land by casting lots (a common practice in ancient Israel for determining the will of God), they must designate a sacred portion of land specifically for the Lord. This portion is to be set aside for the priests and the sanctuary, emphasizing the importance of the sacred in the midst of the everyday. The dimensions given are precise: 25,000 reeds in length and 10,000 reeds in breadth, indicating a large square area. A reed is an ancient measure, which scholars believe to be approximately 10.5 feet, making this holy district about 57.5 miles long and 23 miles wide.

The themes present in this verse include the sanctity of the land, the importance of dedicating a portion of resources to God, and the careful planning and organization required for the returning exiles to re-establish their covenant relationship with God. It reflects the idea that the land belongs to God and that the people are stewards of it, with the holy portion serving as a reminder of God's presence among them. This division of the land and the establishment of a holy district also point to the order and holiness that were to characterize the restored community of Israel.
