Commentary
Exodus 25:9 introduces a foundational principle for the construction of the Tabernacle: divine instruction and precise adherence to God's revealed blueprint. This verse underscores that every detail, from the overall structure to the smallest instrument, was not left to human design but was to be meticulously crafted "according to all that I shew thee, after the pattern."
Context
This verse is part of God's detailed instructions given to Moses on Mount Sinai, immediately following the dramatic covenant ceremony and the giving of the Ten Commandments. After calling Moses up the mountain (Exodus 24:18), God begins to reveal His will for a portable sanctuary, the Tabernacle, where He would dwell among His people Israel during their wilderness journey. The preceding verse, Exodus 25:8, states the purpose: "And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them." Verse 9 sets the stage for the highly specific architectural and furnishing details that follow in chapters 25-31, emphasizing the divine origin of the design.
